New Literacy Center Transition Team
Transition Team of the Tulare County Library Literacy Center was held Tuesday, September 7. Deputy County Librarian Jeff Scott congratulated the participants, reminding them that “The Transition Literacy program was designed for our more advanced literacy customers who have met their initial literacy goals, but could benefit from some additional soft skills to be more successful in future job search, educational endeavors or even in personal matters.”
The graduates all praised the course highly. Rosalba Quevedo, speaking of her desire for an enhanced future, said, “You have opened many new doors for me." Berta Lorenzo commended the program for putting together all the information on Life Skills she “needed to review.” Mary DeLeon said of the experience that “it was much more than I expected.”
The Transition Team is the brainchild of Literacy Specialist Patricia Habeck, and is a pioneering effort to help learners take the necessary steps from academic achievement to workforce participation. It is a sixteen-week Work Team with four sessions in the areas of Life Skills, Financial Literacy Skills, Hands-on Computer Skills and Job Search/Workforce Literacy Skills. It is taught by Ms. Habeck, volunteer tutors David Miner and Barbara Dicks, and Literacy Center staff. The next Transition Team series will begin Tuesday, September 14.
