Climate and Gardening Lecture at Three Rivers Library, November 12

Bill Tweed, writer, naturalist, retired park service manger, and Three Rivers resident for 25 years, will be presenting this interesting and informative lecture. Food For Fines, November 1 - November 29

During the month of November, anyone who brings in non-perishable food items to any branch of the Tulare County Library can have their fines reduced or eliminated. One dollar per food donation will be deducted from existing fines, except for any charges for lost or damaged library items. There is no limit to the amount of fine reduction. (Items must be brought to a staff member at the circulation/check-out counter.)
The food will be picked up by Foodlink for Tulare County and used to restock the pantries of food banks throughout the county. Items collected from the fifteen branches will be distributed in each branch’s local community and surrounding areas.
“Food for Fines’ is a new collaborative program sponsored by the library and Foodlink. It will be held semi-annually in the months of November and April. Library patrons can bring their books and donations November 1-29 to any of the following library branches: Alpaugh, Dinuba, Earlimart, Exeter, Ivanhoe, Orosi, Pixley, Springville, Strathmore, Terra Bella, Three Rivers, Tipton, Visalia and Woodlake. Non-perishable food items will be accepted thankfully from anyone wishing to donate them, whether a fine is due or not.

This month’s Independent Film Movement
selection is Three Worlds, showing at the Visalia Library at 6PM.
Al, a young man from a modest background, is
ten days away from marrying the daughter of his boss. One night, while
coming back drunk from his bachelor party, Al commits a hit-and-run when
he hits a man by accident and is urged to leave the scene of the crime
by his two friends. The next day, gnawed by guilt, he decides to go to
the hospital to inquire anonymously about his victim. What he does not
know is that the entire accident was witnessed from a balcony by a young
woman, Juliette, who is going through her own emotional upheavals.

Around the World in 30 Instruments with Four Shillings Short, November 8th

The husband and wife team play a fantastic array of instruments including Hammered & Mountain Dulcimer, Mandolin, Mandola, Bouzouki, Tinwhistles, Recorders, Medieval and Renaissance Woodwinds, North Indian Sitar, Charango, Bowed Psaltery, Banjo, Bodhran, Guitar, Percussion, and even a Krumhorn. This fun and informative program includes traditional music from Ireland and Scotland, India, Medieval and Renaissance Europe and the Americas.
Celebrating their 18th year together, Aodh Og O’Tuama and Christy Martin tour in the US and Ireland and are independent folk-artists. They have made 10 recordings, give 150 concerts a year and live as full time Troubadours. They travel from town to town performing at music festivals, theatres and performing arts centers, folk societies, libraries, private homes and schools.
Aodh Og O’Tuama grew up in a family of poets, musicians and writers. He received his degree in Music from University College Cork, Ireland, and received a Fellowship from Stanford University in California in Medieval and Renaissance performance. He plays Tinwhistles, Medieval and Renaissance woodwinds, Recorders, Doumbek (from Morocco), bowed Psaltery, Spoons and sings both in English, Gaelic and French.
Christy Martin grew up in a family of musicians and dancers. From the age of 15, she studied North Indian Sitar for 10 years, 5 of them with a student of master Sitarist Ravi Shankar. She began playing the Hammered Dulcimer in her 20’s and has studied with Maggie Sansone, Dan Duggan, Cliff Moses, Robin Petrie, Tony Elman and Glen Morgan. In addition she plays Mandolin, Mandola, Bouzouki, Banjo, Guitar, Bodhran (Irish frame drum), Charango, bowed Psaltery and sings in English, Irish, Spanish and Sanskrit.

Three Rivers' Friends of the Library Book Sale, October 19th
THE FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY SEMI-ANNUAL BOOK SALE will take place at the Library, October 19th, Saturday, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. In addition to hundreds of donated books and media available for sale (pay what you like), we will have entertainment.
At 10:30, “The Wild Child”, bubble guy, will put on his fabulous and scientific show for children and adults alike. Later in the day at 2 p.m., Neil Strain, guitarist, will entertain folks with his finger style pickin’ blues through jazz. And for those who need a break from selecting all those books, Elizabeth will be giving free 15 minute chair massages on the deck.

Crafty Corner: Crochet and Knitting, October 23
Experienced or not, stop
by the Crafty Corner at the Visalia Library on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month at10:30am & 6:30pm.
In our first session, we will teach crochet techniques, but you can bring your own project materials, Works In Progress (WIPs), or Unfinished Objects (UFOs) and meet others who are interested in fiber arts. You can also checkout the array of online patterns available through the library. Instruction will alternate between crochet and knitting.

Independent Film Movement Series, October 17
This month’s Independent Film Movement
selection is Shun Li and the Poet. Shun Li works in a textile factory
near Rome, slowly paying off the broker that brought her from China to
Italy, while saving money so she can bring her young son to join her.
She is suddenly transferred to work as a bartender at a pub in a small
town along the Venetian Lagoon. The pub is the hangout of the local
fishermen, including Bepi, a handsome old Slav immigrant nicknamed "The
Poet." A tender, delicate friendship grows between Shun Li and Bepi. But
gossip soon threatens their innocent relationship, a bond that had once
transcended two very different, yet not at all distant cultures.
