Revisiting the Past at the Tulare County Library

Shades of Tulare County Redux, an historical photo exhibit, opens at the Visalia Branch of the Tulare County Library on Tuesday, September 22. This exhibit consists of over thirty images originally in personal photo albums of local residents of Asian descent collected during the initial Shades project in 1999.

The exhibit runs from September 22 through December 10 and is located on the second floor of the Visalia Branch outside the entrance to the Annie R. Mitchell History Room. Exhibit hours are from 1:00pm - 5:00pm, Tuesday - Friday.

Join us for an opening reception on Wednesday, September 23 from 6:30pm - 7:30pm at the Visalia Library. Local historian and author Terry Ommen (Wild Tulare County, Then & Now: Visalia) and Tulare County Film Commissioner and local historian Eric Coyne will speak about their experiences assisting in the creation of the collection. Refreshments will be provided.

"Every Hero" is a Summer Reading Success!

Tulare County Library wrapped up Summer Reading 2015 with over 9,000 participants, which includes 2,656  children, teens, and adults who signed up for reading logs and prizes. This year we celebrated summer with "Every Hero Has a Story," so it is not surprising there were lots of fun superhero crafts and activities. In addition, we recognized our real life heroes with story times, a safety fair, and visits by Fire, Police, Ambulance Drivers, School Staff, and the Red Cross.

Special performances this year included a magician, reptiles and other wildlife, musicians, Native American dancers, and more. Children and parents turned out for reading, performers, and activities in all Tulare County Library's fifteen locations, with Visalia seeing a huge turnout for performances with up to 400 at each event. Congratulations to our Librarians and Library Staff for being the heroes of Summer Reading.

Also, grateful thanks to the Friends of the Tulare County Library for our Summer Reading special programs!

Earlimart, Pixley, and Terra Bella Branch Libraries are closed for Labor Day on Monday, September 7.

All other branches are regularly closed on Mondays.

Library services on our website are available 24/7.

Storytime has returned to 10:00am on Wednesdays, and we have two Toddler Times. One is on Tuesday, and one is on Thursday. Please note that they are at different times. Fridays are fun for the whole family!

No registration is required for any of the programs, and all programs are free.

First Tuesday Book Club, October 6

For October, we're reading Gods of Gotham by Lyndsay Faye.  

Summary: New York City, 1845. Timothy Wilde, a 27-year-old Irish immigrant, joins the newly formed NYPD and investigates an infanticide and the body of a 12-year-old Irish boy whose spleen has been removed. 

We will be meeting in the Visalia Branch Blue Room to discuss this book on October 6 from 6:30pm - 7:45pm.

Independent Film Series, September 22

Join us at the Visalia Library on Tuesday, September 22 at 6:00pm to watch God's Slave!

Synopsis: Based on the actual events of a 1994 bombing in Buenos Aires still making headlines today, GOD'S SLAVE follows Ahmed, trained since childhood as an Islamic terrorist now assigned to execute a suicide bombing at a synagogue, and David, the cold-blooded Israeli special agent who will stop at nothing to prevent the attack. But neither man is defined solely by their extremist views. Ahmed, posing as a doctor, lives happily with his wife and young son; though David's marriage is on the rocks, he remains devoted to his wife and daughter. With time running out before the attack, David zeros in on Ahmed as a suspect, his investigation culminating in violent, if unexpected, consequences.

The film will be shown at 6:00pm in the upstairs "blue" meeting room at the Visalia Branch Library. This event is free and open to the public. Absolutely everyone is welcome.
