The author of two highly acclaimed novels, The Weight of Feathers and When the Moon Was Ours, Anna-Marie McLemore will talk about her books, including her new novel, Wild Beauty, anticipated for release this October.
The Weight of Feathers tells the story of two families of performers caught in a twenty year feud. The Palomas swim in mermaid exhibitions, and the Corbeaus, former tightrope walkers, perform in the tallest trees they can find. When Cluck Corbeau saves Lace Paloma from death, the lives of the two become dangerously entwined. This novel was a finalist for the 2016 William C. Morris YA Debut Award, a 2016 International Latino Book Awards Finalist, and a Junior Library Guild Fall 2015 Selection.
In When the Moon Was Ours, the mysterious origins of Miel and Sam are not the strangest things about the young woman and man. Roses grow out of Miel’s wrist, and Sam paints moons and hangs them in trees. When the four Bonner sisters, rumored to be witches, decide they want Miel’s roses, they threaten every secret Miel has. When the Moon Was Ours won the 2016 James Triptree, Jr. Award, was named a 2017 Stonewall Honor Book and a Kirkus Best Book of 2016, and longlisted for the National Book Award in Young People’s Literature.
During her visit, Ms. McLemore will update fans about her new book, Wild Beauty, a magical tale of the tragic legacy of deep love and the mystery of a boy named Fel. She will also talk about the ins and outs of writing and publishing. Following the event she will be available to sign copies of her books.
Born in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, Ms. McLemore grew up in a Mexican-American family. She attended University of Southern California on a Trustee Scholarship. A Lambda Literary Fellow, her work was featured by the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West, CRATE Literary Magazine's cratelit, Camera Obscura's Bridge the Gap Series, and The Portland Review.
