Author Reading at the Three Rivers Library
On Thursday August 23rd at 6:30 pm please join us at the Three Rivers Library, where three authors will read from their works set in Three Rivers. This is a free event open to the public.
Melissa Clark is an author, television writer and college instructor. "Swimming Upstream, Slowly" (Broadway Books) was chosen as a Target Breakout Book in 2006. She created the animated television
show, "Braceface" which starred the voice of Alicia Silverstone and has written scripts for "Rolie Polie Olie", "Sweet Valley High", among others. Her new novel, "Imperfect," was written in part during a visit to Three Rivers. She lives in Los Angeles.
Dalan Smith was raised ranching, farming and enjoying horses in a small southern Idaho community, obtained a degree in management from the University of Utah, then spent several years successfully climbing corporate ladders in Utah and California before choosing to be a self-employed ranch manager, entrepreneur, and real estate broker. He enjoys living with his wife, Judy, on the South Fork. His memoir "Bill & I" is about building the Shatner Ranch.
Bill Haxton has had numerous poems published, as well as magazine articles, 500 episodes of the public radio program This Day in America, and "The Report to the United States Congress" on the condition of education in the Republic of the Marshal Islands, which he considers to be one of his best works. As a founder of the Three Rivers Performing Arts Institute he brought an annual classical music series to our town, as well as hosting Concert on the Grass. He and his wife Anne live on Dinely Drive. Bill's going to read poems inspired by Three Rivers.
Christina Lynch (emcee) is a television writer and novelist who lives on the North Fork with an assortment of animals. Her novel"City of Dark Magic," written with Meg Howrey under the pseudonym Magnus Flyte, will be published in December by Penguin Books.

First Tuesday Book Club, September 4
The next "First Tuesday Book Club" will meet on September 4 at 6:30 pm in the blue meeting room. This month we are reading Wild : From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed.
Book summary: Oprah's Book Club 2.0 selection. A powerful, blazingly honest memoir:
the story of an eleven-hundred-mile solo hike that broke down a young
woman reeling from catastrophe--and built her back up again. At
twenty-two, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake
of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was
soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made
the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest
Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to
Washington State--and to do it alone. She had no experience as a
long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than "an idea,
vague and outlandish and full of promise." But it was a promise of
piecing back together a life that had come undone. Strayed faces down
rattlesnakes and black bears, intense heat and record snowfalls, and
both the beauty and loneliness of the trail. Told with great suspense
and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, Wild vividly captures the
terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all
odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed
her.

Literacy Advocate Award Recipient Honored
Phonemany Lounbandith, Self Sufficiency Resource
Specialist for HHSA’s Porterville District Office, received the Literacy
Advocate award yesterday.
TulareWORKS Division Manager Donna Ortiz
presented the quarterly award on behalf of HHSA and the County Library’s
Read to Succeed Literacy program. The honor was designed for HHSA
counselors and specialists who have referred their
clients to a joint program developed by HHSA and the Library Literacy
Center.
This is the second time Ms. Lounbandith has received the award.
The program is designed to better equip HHSA clients in finding and keeping employment.
It is unique in its focus. The Literacy
Center provides one-on-one tutoring, which is particularly successful
with individuals who do not thrive in a classroom setting.
At the same time, HHSA counselors such as Ms. Lounbandith make
sure clients have the practical necessities, such as child care or bus
tokens, to ensure their participation.
In addition to Ms. Ortiz, the presentation today was
attended by Sylvia Nacianceno, HHSA Porterville Office Unit Manager; Win
Doyle, HHSA/Literacy Coordinator, and the staff of the Porterville
Office.
Over 275 referrals have been made to the program by HHSA staff from the five TulareWORKS offices in Tulare County.
