On a desolate island in the Arctic Circle, two men work at a small meteorological station, taking readings from their radioactive surroundings. Sergei, a gruff professional in his fifties, takes his job very seriously. His new partner, bright eyed college grad Pavel, retreats to his MP3 player and video games to avoid Sergei's imposing presence. One day while Sergei is out, inexperienced Pavel receives terrible news for Sergei from HQ. Intimidated, Pavel can't bring himself to disclose the information. When the truth is finally revealed, the consequences explode against a chilling backdrop of thick fog, sharp rocks, and the merciless Arctic Sea.

Fashion Fun Funds Library Literacy

The ‘Literacy in Style’ show held last Saturday featured not just women’s clothes from Dress Barn of Visalia but also books used by the Literacy Center to teach adult learners.

“We wanted to showcase our fashions and the work of the Literacy Center in a unique way,” said Barbara Dicks, Dress Barn Assistant Manager. “The tutors and learners were part of the show, and they displayed some of the books used at the Center as they modeled the clothing.”

The show was a fundraiser for the Center and, in addition to the fashions, a silent auction featuring gift baskets was part of the afternoon.

“The weather was beautiful and so were our models and their outfits,” said Win Doyle, Literacy Center staff member. “We are grateful to Dress Barn for sharing with us this fun way of raising money to buy the books needed to keep our program going. There is a 41 percent illiteracy rate in the county and we want to bring that number down.”

The Tulare County Library Literacy Center serves all Tulare County adults in need of literacy services. For further information, call the Center at 713-2745.

SJVC Students Help Literacy Center Adults

Usually mature adults are the ones giving support to young college students, but not this time.

Instead, San Joaquin Valley College students and faculty contributed over $800 last month to buy books for the Tulare County Library Literacy Center learners. The funds were raised during ‘Dress Down Days’ and will be used to purchase about 400 GED books.

“I am touched and grateful for this unexpected support for our program,” said Patricia Habeck, Literacy Center program manager. “SJVC has provided us with great interns in the past, but this is the first time the entire school has worked to help our learners. We are particularly grateful at this time of budget cuts which are seriously affecting our program. I understand this was one of their most successful fund raisers, and I thank everyone at SJVC on behalf of our learners, our tutors, and our staff.”

Presenting the check was Visalia Dean Kerrie Liles, who said, “Through the continued relationship with the Literacy Center, I have come to realize much of what the Literacy Center does for our County is financed through donations and grants. I thought this would be a wonderful way to give back to the Literacy Center and help them continue to provide the services they provide to Tulare County.”

The fundraiser is one of the events SJVC sponsors as part of the school’s commitment to educating proactive citizens.
