Teen Summer Reading Volunteers Needed!

Volunteers needed
 
Visalia Branch Library
Summer Reading Program
June 13th to July 22th

 
· School credit may be possible!
· Help register kids for reading logs, hand out prizes for reading, and direct participants at special events.
· Help is needed Tuesday through Saturday. Schedules are flexible.
· Must be at least 14 years old
· Pick up a volunteer application at Circulation Desk today (or see below)!

Must attend training on:
Saturday, June 3rd at 3:00 pm
OR
Thursday, June 8th at 6:30 pm

Teens Needed for PAID Summer Internship. Applications due 5/6

SUMMER INTERNS WANTED!!!
 
Get valuable job experience at the library! We are excited to announce 'The Friends of the Tulare County Library Scholarship'. Interns receive a stipend of $300 after successful completion of the internship.
Teens ages 14-19 are welcome to apply. We will select three interns, who will assist with our annual Summer Reading Program, which attracts thousands of children and families to the library! Interns must be available during library hours between Tuesday, June 13th though Saturday, July 22
Applications are available at the Children’s Reference desks and on the Teen Bulletin Board. Return your application to the Children’s Reference desk by May 6th, 2017. The top candidates will be interviewed beginning May 19th.

"Every Hero" is a Summer Reading Success!

Tulare County Library wrapped up Summer Reading 2015 with over 9,000 participants, which includes 2,656  children, teens, and adults who signed up for reading logs and prizes. This year we celebrated summer with "Every Hero Has a Story," so it is not surprising there were lots of fun superhero crafts and activities. In addition, we recognized our real life heroes with story times, a safety fair, and visits by Fire, Police, Ambulance Drivers, School Staff, and the Red Cross.

Special performances this year included a magician, reptiles and other wildlife, musicians, Native American dancers, and more. Children and parents turned out for reading, performers, and activities in all Tulare County Library's fifteen locations, with Visalia seeing a huge turnout for performances with up to 400 at each event. Congratulations to our Librarians and Library Staff for being the heroes of Summer Reading.

Also, grateful thanks to the Friends of the Tulare County Library for our Summer Reading special programs!

Every Hero Has a Story at Tulare County Library Bran Summer Reading Programs for Children

All kids love super heroes, and in this year's Summer Reading they find out "Every Hero Has a Story." Children can read about super heroes, everyday heroes, and anything else they enjoy while earning prizes for reading at the same time. Registration begins June 2 with programs from Tuesday, June 9 to Friday, July 25.

All programs are free and open to the public.

The branches also host special performers throughout Summer Reading.

First Ever Tween Summer Reading Program


Join us for our first ever tween reading program this summer! The tween summer reading program is for kids between the ages of 10-12. Sign ups begin this week and the first day for prizes is Tuesday, June 10. More rules about the program can be found at the teen site.

Events we have planned for the tween summer reading program include:


Jun 11: Building with Legos
Jun 18: Watching The Lego Movie
Jun 25: Building a Marshmallow Tower
Jul 9: Come and Make some Oobleck!
Jul 16: Video Game Day with the Wii U!
Jul 23: Tween Book Club*
  
All events for the tween program are from 2:00pm - 4:00pm in the upstairs blue meeting room at the Visalia Branch, and are absolutely free.

Tweens do not need to be accompanied by an adult to attend these events, and can attend the events without signing up for the summer reading program. They do not have to attend events to participate in summer reading.


*Our book club selection is What We Found in the Sofa (and How it Saved the World) by Henry Clark. Participation is limited to the first 18 tweens due to a limited number of copies.

Summer Reading Events on Website Calendar

Summer reading is right around the corner! Programs will be offered for adults, kids, tweens and teens, with sign ups starting the first week in June. These programs will be held at the Visalia Branch Library at 200 W. Oak St., Visalia.

All of our summer reading events, including children's program performers, tween crafts, teen movies, and adult programs for both June and July are available on our eVanced Calendar.
