Movie - Baby Driver, Tue 10/24 at 6 pm, Visalia Library

Baby is a young and partially hearing impaired getaway driver who can make any wild move while in motion with the right track playing. It's a critical talent he needs to survive his indentured servitude to the crime boss, Doc, who values his role in his meticulously planned robberies.
However, just when Baby thinks he is finally free and clear to have his own life with his new girlfriend, Debora, Doc coerces him back for another job. Now saddled with a crew of thugs too violently unstable to keep to Doc's plans, Baby finds himself and everything he cares for in terrible danger.
To survive and escape the coming maelstrom, it will take all of Baby's skill, wits and daring, but even on the best track, can he make it when life is forcing him to face the music? - www.imdb.com

Synopsis: The critically acclaimed documentary A Place at the Table, directed by Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush, examines the connections between food access, food security, hunger and obesity.

It’s designed to spur conversation and generate solutions to address our nation’s crisis of hunger and obesity.

Independent Film Movement Series, August 26

The Independent Film Movement Series returns for its fifth year on August 26. Please note that it's also moving to a new night: it is now on the 4th Tuesday of each month.

Our first selection this year is Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?

In this madcap and lighthearted comedic romp, introverted optometrist Weichung begins to question his marriage with his wife Feng, upon learning of her desire to have another baby. At his sister's engagement party, Weichung bumps into an old friend, Stephen, a wedding photographer who, though also married, is living the high life of a younger, single gay man. When Stephen teases Weichung for his newly straightlaced lifestyle, dormant emotions are awakened in Weichung, setting him off on a quest for true romance and desire.

Directed by Arvin Chen | Canada | 2013 | Mandarin with English subtitles | 106 min

The film will be shown at 6:00pm in the upstairs "blue" meeting room at the Visalia Branch Library. This event, and future events in this series, is free and open to the public. Absolutely everyone is welcome.

For more information, visit the Reference Desk or call (559) 713-2723.

Independent Film Series, May 15

This month’s Independent Film Movement selection is IN THE NAME OF. Adam is a Catholic priest who discovered his calling as a servant of God at the relatively late age of 21. He now lives in a village in rural Poland where he works with teenagers with behavioral problems who fight and yell abuse. He declines the advances of a young blonde named Ewa, saying he is already spoken for. However, celibacy is not the only reason for his rejection. Adam knows that he desires men and that his embrace of the priesthood has been a flight from his own sexuality. When he meets Lukasz, the strange and taciturn son of a simple rural family, Adam's self-imposed abstinence becomes a heavy burden.

Directed by Małgośka Szumowska

Canada / 2012 / Polish with English subtitles / 102 min

This event is free to the public and all are welcome.

*This will be the last film of the season. We will be taking a break to make room for the library’s Summer Reading Program activities. The Independent Film Series will resume in August, 2014. *
